Oberkassel – Sophisticated metropolis

“Live close Feel free” – the slogan used by the Rhine metropolis of Düsseldorf when presenting itself to its citizens and visitors. It’s no coincidence that the people of Düsseldorf are generally thought to be very welcoming and open. But there’s much more to living close, because in actual fact everything in Düsseldorf is close by. Thanks to the compact urban space and the wide range of transport options, you can always speedily get where you want to go. It’s also one of the reasons why Düsseldorf is a highly attractive business location – in recent years numerous companies, both national and international, have set up branches in the city.

The “feel free” factor of Düsseldorf can be experienced everywhere. First and foremost this definitely refers to the tolerance and expressiveness of the city’s residents, which is no wonder because Düsseldorf has an exceptionally active art and cultural scene – in terms of diversity and quality it compares highly favourably with other metropolises around the globe. This isn’t surprising either, as the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts has been imparting its knowledge of the fine arts to young, talented artists from all over the world since 1773, and professors such as Joseph Beuys have shaped the philosophy and artworks at this institution for several generations.

When people talk about art and freedom in Düsseldorf, a very special topic is always focused on – Düsseldorf is THE fashion capital of Germany and has long been at the same high level as Milan, Paris, Tokyo and New York. Nowhere else do creative, small studios come together in such a way with renowned boutiques. A short and concise name makes the hearts of all fashion aficionados beat faster: Kö, or to be precise, the Königsallee, is one of the most renowned fashion attractions and home to a large number of world-famous design labels.

To ensure that the thriving economic force and pulsating creativity remain vibrant, Düsseldorf has developed into an extraordinary centre of education. Whether international children’s daycare centres and schools, numerous private universities and institutions or the renowned Heinrich Heine University, there’s a wide range of education and training opportunities to choose from. The city can also shine in the field of medical education with its prestigious and internationally acclaimed Düsseldorf University Hospital.

Freedom also means that people can travel wherever they want, and in this respect Düsseldorf is a genuine metropolis, offering almost every form of transport imaginable. Those who want to travel further benefit from the international airport, ICE connections at the main railway station and airport as well as the intact, well-developed motorway network which transports travellers to the nearby Ruhr region or the neighbouring Netherlands in a matter of minutes. When out and about in the city, the car can be happily left behind. The Rheinbahn with its dense local transport network ensures perfect mobility – without the stress of looking for parking spaces. Those who prefer to be out and about under their own steam can make use of the many kilometres of cycle paths which are added to almost every day, or use up-to-date e-scooters and car sharing.

Best of “Live close Feel free”.

  • Oberkassel – vibrant

The success story of Oberkassel began at the start of the 20th century.

A veritable building boom was initiated with the development of the district on the left bank of the River Rhine, previously used purely for agriculture. Still today, a large number of highly attractive buildings in a contemporary style bear witness to this era and with its town houses give Oberkassel its innate charm, for example on Kaiser Willhelm Ring overlooking the Rhine.

The heart of Oberkassel is Luegallee – always an inviting destination for strolling and lingering, with many chic boutiques, rustic pubs, fine confectionery shops and trendy eateries. The produce that Oberkassel residents can purchase twice a week at the weekly market centrally located on Barbarossa Platz is also fresh and exceedingly tasty. Shops for daily needs are within walking distance, as are doctors and chemists.

Those who prefer an active life find a wide range of sports opportunities in Oberkassel, for example perfectly prepared running paths on the Rhine meadows for individualists, and cyclists have countless kilometres of cycle paths at their disposal. If you’d rather not do sports on your own there are a variety of sports clubs to choose from. Whether hockey, swimming or tennis, people are active in Oberkassel.
